At Granny’s House

Joël Penkman is a new zealander artist. After earning a degree in graphic design, he moved to UK, where he started working as a designer and painter. His biggest interests are food and painting, hence the idea of combining them choosing desserts, candies and ice creams as a main theme, creating some original still lifes which inevitably remind us of our chilhood afternoons at granny’s house. Even the technique used is totally particular: “My favourite medium is egg tempera. It is very time consuming as I make the gesso to prepare my boards and grind my own paint to mix, but the results are worth it”. We couldn’t agree more.

Joël Penkman è un artista neozelandese. Dopo aver conseguito una laurea in graphic design, si trasferisce in Inghilterra, dove inizia a lavorare come designer e pittore. I suoi più grandi interessi sono il cibo e la pittura: da qui l’idea di unire queste due passioni scegliendo dolci, caramelle e gelati come principali soggetti delle sue opere, creando delle originali “nature morte” che inevitabilmente ci riportano alla mente i pomeriggi d’infanzia a casa della nonna. Anche l’esecuzione avviene in modo del tutto particolare: “La mia tecnica preferita è la tempera all’uovo. Occorre del tempo per preparare il gesso per le tavole e ricavare la giusta sfumatura dal colore in polvere, ma ne vale la pena”. Non potremmo essere più d’accordo.

She started drawing at the age of 2, inspired by Disney comics and cartoons, and never stopped since then. Her collection of books and food-shaped stuff is constantly expanding.
